FG Slams Meta with $220m Penalty

Nigeria fines meta $220m for data protection violations...

Nigeria's FCCPC fines Meta $220m for violating data privacy laws, citing unauthorized data sharing on Facebook and WhatsApp, and abuse of market dominance.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) imposed a significant fine of $220 million on Meta Platforms on Friday, July 19, for violating data privacy laws. The commission took this action due to Meta's non-compliance with local regulations regarding consumer and data protection.

According to the FCCPC's statement, Meta's data handling practices on Facebook and WhatsApp were found to be in breach of Nigerian data protection regulations. The commission discovered that Meta had failed to provide users in Nigeria with control over their personal data, shared user data without obtaining consent, and exploited its dominant position in the market.
