BUA truck accident in Anambra kills 5, injures several others. Brake failure and excessive speed suspected as causes. FRSC investigates and condoles with victims' families.



The incident happened on Tuesday, July 9 at approximately 9:55 a.m.


According to Margret Onagbe, a spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra state command, the trailer's brakes failed, forcing it to smash into the woods and cause fatalities and injuries.


She denied reports from several sources claiming the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency's (ARTMA) actions were the reason behind the disaster.


Onagbe stated that a, “tragic road traffic accident occurred today July 9, a multiple vehicle collision occurred at green energy oil and gas near Eke Awgbu along Agulu-Agwubu road, involved in the crash were a commercial Howo truck belonging to BUA without a registration number, a commercial TVS tricycle with registration number NZH84LG, a commercial Q motorcycle with registration number OLU245QV, and a private Honda motorcycle with no registration number” she reported.


She stated that the incident was likely caused by brake failure and excessive speed. According to her, the truck driver lost control of his vehicle due to brake failure while speeding, colliding with other cars at a checkpoint, and ultimately causing a crash.


Eleven people were involved in the incident: two adult females and nine adult men. Five adult males and one adult female had non-fatal injuries, while four adult male and one adult female adult suffered fatal injuries.


A bystander had already hurried the injured victims to the referral health center in Awgbu, while the deceased victims were transferred to St. Joseph's mortuary in Adazi Ani, before the FRSC rescue squad from RS5.35 Igboukwu arrived, the reporter stated.


She said the rescue crew controlled traffic and made sure everything was cleared from the incident site.


She also said that the Anambra State Corps' sector commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi, sent his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.


The sector commander stressed how crucial it is to stick to the speed limit in order to reach your destinations safely.
