Tinubu Appoints Tanimu Yakubu as Budget Office DG
President Bola Tinubu appoints Tanimu Yakubu as new Director-General of Budget Office of the Federation, succeeding Ben Akabueze. Yakubu, a seasoned economist, brings wealth of experience to lead agency responsible for managing Nigeria's finances and promoting fiscal sustainability.
President Bola Tinubu has named Tanimu Yakubu as the new Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, taking over from Ben Akabueze, whose tenure has ended. This appointment was announced in a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Thursday, June 13.
Tanimu Yakubu, a seasoned economist, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously served as Chief Economic Adviser to a former President from 2007 to 2010 and as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2003 to 2007. Additionally, he held the position of Commissioner of Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning in Katsina State from 1999 to 2003.
The new Director-General holds a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics, both from Wagner College, Staten Island, New York. With his impressive background and expertise, Yakubu is well-equipped to lead the Budget Office of the Federation.
President Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Director-General, Ben Akabueze, for his dedicated service and wished him success in his future endeavors. This marks a smooth transition in leadership, ensuring continuity in the important work of the Budget Office.
“The President expects the new Director- General of this pivotal agency to further enhance the provision of efficient and qualitative budget functions, with a view to promoting fiscal sustainability, transparency, and accountability in public finance management for national development,” the statement added.
The Budget Office of the Federation plays a crucial role in the management of Nigeria's finances, responsible for executing the budget function, implementing budget and fiscal policies, and ensuring the effective allocation of resources.
The office is organized into six operational departments, each with distinct responsibilities: Revenue/Fiscal Policy, Expenditure Social, Expenditure Economics, Budget Monitoring and Evaluation, Human Resources Management, and Finance and Accounts. Additionally, seven specialized units support the departments, including ICT, ACTU, Procurement, Legal, Stock Verification, Internal Audit, and Servicom. This structural framework enables the office to efficiently carry out its duties and achieve its objectives.
