Senate Pushes Supplementary Budget Deadline to Year-End
Senate Extends 2023 Supplemental Budget Deadline to December 31, 2024. In a swift move, the Senate extended the implementation deadline from June 30 to December 31, 2024, following previous extensions and a presidential request to ensure full implementation of the budget provisions.
The Senate extended the 2023 supplemental budget's implementation deadline from June 30 to December 31, 2024, in a swift move on Thursday, June 27. The upper chamber passed the extension bill in under 20 minutes, following a two-hour closed-door meeting.
The extension builds upon previous extensions granted by both houses of the National Assembly. In December 2023, the implementation period for the capital budget was extended from December 31, 2023, to March 31, 2024, alongside the approval of the N2.17 trillion 2023 supplementary budget in November 2023.
In March, President Bola Tinubu requested an extension, which was granted by both the Senate and House of Representatives, pushing the implementation deadline from March 31, 2024, to June 30, 2024. The President emphasized the need for the extension to ensure full implementation of the provisions of the two acts.
President Tinubu signed the 2023 N2.17 trillion supplementary budget into law in November 2023. The Senate passed the 2023 Supplementary Appropriation Bill on November 2, 2023, which was forwarded by the President for consideration.
With the June 30, 2024, deadline looming, both chambers hastily reconvened on Thursday, June 27, cutting short their recess to address further extensions in urgent sessions, prior to their planned resumption on July 2, 2024.
