Nollywood Legend Olu Jacobs Passes On

Veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs passes away at 80, after a long battle with dementia. With a career spanning over 40 years, he leaves behind a legacy as one of Nollywood's finest performers, known for his exceptional talent, dedication, and impact on the Nigerian film industry.

Olu Baiyewu Jacob, a seasoned Nollywood actor, has passed away.

He passed away in his Lagos home on Sunday, June 30.

He supposedly fought dementia for a long time before passing away.

Joke Silva, a seasoned Nollywood actress and film director, who is also his wife and coworker, stated last year, soon after he turned 80 years old, that it has not been simple to manage his health issues.

The leading man has been fighting dementia for a while.

She added that her husband has undergone tremendous change as a result of his ailing health and that he is no longer the same man she married 37 years ago.

“It hasn't been easy. There was a point of acceptance for me that everything happening is reality. It is like the person I married, 80 per cent of the time, is no longer there.

“But the thing is this: when he was there, he was an incredible father to his children and an amazing husband. He was practically my best friend.”

Silva stated that she still loves her spouse in spite of his health issue.

“The husband I knew is no longer there for me. This man that is here is someone I still love, but love in a different way,” she said.

Olu Jacobs has made an indelible impact on Nollywood, Nigeria's thriving film industry. With a career spanning over four decades, he has bridged the gap between traditional and contemporary acting styles, leaving a lasting legacy.

After honing his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in England, Jacobs went on to shine in various international films and British repertory theaters. His talent and dedication earned him the coveted Best Actor in a Leading Role award at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2007.

Olu Jacobs' passion for performing was ignited by the annual performance party hosted by the legendary Hubert Ogunde at the Colonial Hotel in Kano. This spark led him to pursue his dreams in England, where he honed his craft at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

Jacobs' exceptional talent and dedication have earned him accolades as one of Nollywood's finest performers, a masterful role interpreter, and a skilled wordsmith. His impressive career spanning five decades has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA) and the Lifetime Achievement Award from MAA in 2016.
