IN a recent interview, music producer and label executive Don Jazzy shared a candid insight into the music industry, highlighting the significant financial investment required to launch an artist's career. According to Don Jazzy, signing an artist requires an investment of over 100 million naira (approximately $250,000) to help them achieve success.

Don Jazzy explained that when he comes across an artist he likes, he considers the substantial financial commitment necessary to support their growth. This investment includes costs such as marketing, promotion, and production, all aimed at helping the artist gain visibility and success in the competitive music industry.

Don Jazzy said, “I can't sign everybody, when I see an artist that I like, I'm thinking of an investment of over 100 million before they can blow up.”

The veteran producer also addressed the common complaint from artists who claim to have sent numerous DMs (direct messages) to industry professionals like himself without receiving a response. Don Jazzy revealed that he often checks his DMs and finds messages from artists he hadn't noticed earlier, but emphasized that he can't sign every talented musician who reaches out to him due to limited resources.

“Sometimes when artist blow up, and they start going to interviews, they'll say ‘oh, I sent so many DMs to different people but got no response.’ Even when they don't mention my name, I'll be like let me go and check. And everytime I check, I'll see them in my DM but I didn't see it. But then at the end of the day, you cannot sign everybody. If I see an artist now that I like, in my mind I'm thinking of an investment of 50-100 million to be invested in one year so they can blow up. I don't have enough money to invest such an amount on too many artists,” he added.

Don Jazzy's comments offer a realistic perspective on the music industry, where financial backing plays a crucial role in an artist's success. His honesty highlights the challenges faced by industry professionals in identifying and supporting talented artists, and the tough decisions they must make when it comes to investing in new talent.
