Germany salvaged a draw with Switzerland in Group A, thanks to a late equalizer from substitute Niclas Fullkrug, securing first place in the group. Switzerland had taken an early lead through Dan Ndoye's goal, and they believed they would win the group until Fullkrug's header in stoppage time. The German home crowd erupted in celebration, extending their unbeaten start to Euro 2024.
Switzerland had fought valiantly for over 90 minutes, but ultimately fell short of winning the group. Despite this, they still advanced to the next round. Coach Murat Yakin's team knew a win would see them overtake Germany, and they almost succeeded in Frankfurt until pressure told in stoppage time. Germany, who had frustrated their home fans for much of the game, finally created enough chances late on to snatch a draw.
Ndoye's first-time finish into the net, following Remo Freuler's dangerous cross, had Swiss fans jubilant earlier in the game. In the second half, Ndoye also had a goal disallowed for offside that would have made it 2-0. This was the second time a goal was disallowed, after Germany's Robert Andrich was replaced by the video assistant referee (VAR). Referee Daniele Orsato reversed goalkeeper Yann Sommer's save when he consulted the pitchside monitor to check if Jamal Musiala had fouled during the build-up. Andrich curled a shot from the edge of the area under Sommer's arms.
Despite not exhibiting the same level of ruthlessness as in their first two wins, Germany still has high expectations of winning the championship.
Granite Xhaka was named man of the match for his outstanding performance.
