Despite being down to ten men, Ecuador took the lead in the 40th minute through a stunning goal from Jeremy Sarmiento, who scored from outside the area with a right-footed strike that landed in the bottom right corner of the box. The goal was the result of a superb counterattack that the Venezuelan defense struggled to keep up with.

Venezuela finally capitalized on their numerical advantage when super-sub Eduard Bello scored in the 73rd minute with a right-footed effort from the right side of the six-yard box to the bottom right corner, giving La Vinotinto a 2-1 lead.
