Argentina secured their spot in the 2024 Copa America quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Chile, thanks to Lautaro Martinez's late goal. The defending champions dominated the match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with 22 shots on goal.

Nicolas Gonzalez and Julian Alvarez tested Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo early, setting the tone for the game. Lionel Messi hit the post in the first half, and Alexis Mac Allister missed a great chance after the interval. Chile finally had a chance in the 72nd minute, but Rodrigo Echeverria's shot was saved by Emiliano Martinez.

Chile attempted to break their 30-game losing streak to Argentina in the Copa America, with Echeverria and Marcelino Nunez testing Martinez. However, Martinez scored the winner in the 88th minute, reacting first to a loose ball in the penalty area.

Martinez praised the team's effort, saying, “These matches are always like this, we have to continue in the same way...treating the matches in this way, as they are all going to be complicated.” Argentina leads Group A and will face Peru on Sunday.

In another Group A match, Canada secured their first-ever Copa America win with a 1-0 victory over Peru. Jonathan David scored the decisive goal in the intense heat at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City. Assistant referee Humberto Panjoj collapsed due to the heat and was replaced.

After Maxime Crepeau stopped a Piero Quispe shot, Gianluca Lapadula's goal was disallowed for offside. Peru's Miguel Araujo was sent off for a strong challenge, and David scored Canada's first goal 15 minutes later. Canada faces Chile on Sunday.

Mexico's captain Edson Alvarez announced he would miss the remainder of the Copa America due to a hamstring injury sustained in the 1-0 win over Jamaica. The West Ham United midfielder left the field after 30 minutes.

Claudio Bravo was named man of the match, and Argentina's win secured their spot in the quarterfinals.

“I have made the decision to stay with the team until the end, to support and encourage them, as I always have done. Now it will be my turn off the field,” Alvarez said in a video posted on social media by the national team.

“It will also help my rehabilitation and return as soon as possible.”
