5 Construction Workers Trapped in Abia Building Collapse

Three-story Abia building collapses, trapping five construction workers

A three-story building in the Umumbi Autonomous Community in Ukwa West Local Government Area, Abia State, has trapped five workers from a construction site.

On Friday afternoon, June 7, the three-story building collapsed while the workers were inside the facility, going about their daily business.

It was discovered that three carpenters who were working on the roof survived the fall despite the horrific event.

The group was reportedly plastering the ground floor when the structure suddenly collapsed, trapping them beneath the debris.

Two of the people buried beneath the rubble were revealed to be brothers by blood who had just moved to the building site. Less than eight hours had passed since they started working there when they were trapped.

As per the analysis of construction expert Engr. Chinedu Okwara, the collapse was probably caused by using inferior materials and not having a professional building engineer supervising the project.

The Ukwa West Local Government Area chairman, Newman Azu, verified the building collapse. He said that he was at the scene with his team, setting up heavy machinery to speed up excavation work and save lives that were buried by the debris.
