On Friday, May 10, 2024, Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will land in Nigeria on a three-day special visit.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, invited the couple to Nigeria so they could see injured soldiers.

The creator of Invictus Games will spend three days in Nigeria meeting with injured soldiers and their families, according to Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters (DHQ), who made this announcement on Thursday.

According to Marquis, the trip, which is slated to take place from May 10–13, 2024, will facilitate the injured soldiers' recuperation.

“We realised that 80% of our soldiers have been involved in this recovery programme, they are getting better. Their outlook to life is positive,”AVM Marquis said.

The visit, he continued, will support their recuperation, “to improve their personal self-esteem to improve their mental health. Their emotional intelligence has been improved and also their families seeing them, as they used to be breadwinners who is capable of continue living. So this engagement with Invictus is giving us the opportunity for the recovery for our soldiers.”

He went on to say that the visit will validate the Nigerian Armed Forces' admission as members of the Invictus community.

He emphasized once more how crucial the visit is now to Nigeria's plans to host an Invictus game.

Furthermore, AVM Marquis emphasized the necessity of constructing a cutting-edge facility for the treatment of sick and wounded soldiers, with a focus on “particularly the post-traumatic syndrome and the post-traumatic stress syndrome that are manifesting due to our engagement in the counter insurgency operation.”

He revealed that the couple would go to the states of Lagos and Kaduna, where they would also meet with the governors of those areas.

“So, to be specific, now, they will be arriving here tomorrow (Friday) and they will be received, and the reception will be a quiet reception because they will be traveling 14 hours to get to this place. They will be taken to the hotel.”

He stated that the couple will visit the Chief of Defence Staff by Friday at noon after sleeping at the hotel.

The Director went on to say that before meeting with Nigeria's senior security officer, Prince Harry and his spouse would pay a visit to their own school, Wuse Light Academy, which is supported by their non-governmental organization.

They will next travel to Kaduna State to see the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, which houses injured and wounded soldiers while they receive medical attention.

“On Saturday, we'll be having like an exhibition of novelty match. The CDS team and the Duke team will be having a volleyball match at armed forces officers mess in the morning. And this is just to engage with the wounded and injured soldiers. It's a sitting volleyball match coming in the morning.

“So after that, we have a programme for them by 01:00 pm. A reception, where they will be interacting with families of wounded and injured soldiers and families of soldiers and officers killed in action and service members generally,” the Director said.

The couple will pay a courtesy call on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday, according to AVM Marquis. They will also visit a basketball court in Lagos that is used by the school their NGO supports, where a basketball exhibition match is scheduled.

The pair is anticipated to be given a reception on Sunday before making their way back to Abuja in time for their Monday departure.
