Olajide Omotayo and Edem Offiong earn spots in the Paris Olympics
The Nigerian table tennis team, consisting of Olajide Omotayo and Edem Offiong, has been awarded tickets to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
In the ITTF Africa Olympics qualifiers semi-final in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday, the Nigerians accomplished the goal by defeating their respective opponents.
Omotayo earned his second Olympic berth by defeating Saheed Idowu of Congo-Brazaville in four straight sets in the men's singles competition.
He competed in the men's singles event in the Tokyo Olympics, but fell 4-0 to Portugal's Tiago Apolonia.
Offiong qualified for her sixth Olympic games after defeating Tunisian Gracie Fadwa 4-2 in the women's singles round.
Since 2004 when she made her Olympic debut in Athens, the 37-year-old has never failed to qualify.
The Calabar-born athlete advanced to the second round of the past Olympics, where she was humiliated in a 40-minute match by US player Zhang Lily.
Fatimo Bello, meanwhile, lost the women's singles match 4-2 against Hanffoy Sarah of Cameroon. Gracie Fadwa will compete for the last automatic berth on Saturday, and Bello, the Cameroonian, gained the right to compete in the Olympics.
