Music Star Daddy Showkey Opens Up About Criminal Past
I was a member of a robbery gang once, says Daddy Showkey
Veteran artist Daddy Showkey, also known as John Odafe Asiemo, has shared a terrifying story from his youth that involved gang activity in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
He related how he found a gun in a trash dump with some other young males, and they used it to scare others.
They carried on with their careless actions until a fateful day when they were discovered and almost lynched.
Daddy Showkey remembered being bound up with his gang members and waiting to be burned.
Nonetheless, something he called a miracle saved their lives. Thinking back on his stormy upbringing, he underlined that his journey from such a difficult upbringing to legendary status is evidence that anyone can succeed with perseverance and hard effort.
He said: “I was in a gang back in the day. I won't lie. Some of us found a gun where we used to pick valuables from a refuse dump in Ikorodu. We started using the gun to terrorize the area.
“One day, when we were out in our usual style, someone saw us and started screaming, 'thieves, thieves, thieves.' Then we started running, but we were apprehended. They tied us up. They were about to burn us but we were saved miraculously.
“I am a living testimony for every young person because if I can be alive today and still become Daddy Showkey, then there's hope for everyone.”
Daddy Showkey also shared a somber tale of a former gang member who wasn't as fortunate, meeting a tragic end at the hands of a lynch mob after being caught, serving as a stark contrast to his own fortunate escape and eventual success.
