Don Jazzy Weighs In On Songwriting Debate: 'Delivery Is What Matters'Don Jazzy Weighs In On Songwriting Debate: 'Delivery Is What Matters'
MICHAEL Collins Ajere popularly known as Don Jazzy, a renowned music producer and industry expert, has weighed in on the debate about artists using songwriters. He emphasizes that having a songwriter doesn't diminish an artist's talent or contribution.
According to Don Jazzy, what matters most is the delivery and vibe an artist brings to a song. He uses the example of Davido's hit song “If” to illustrate his point, suggesting that even if Tekno had sung the same lyrics, it wouldn't have been a hit without Davido's unique delivery and authenticity.
Don Jazzy also references Tekno's claim of having “30 billion for the account,” which he believes wouldn't have been believable coming from Tekno, but was convincing and relatable when Davido said it.
He said: “Sometimes when I see saying, Oh, this artist doesn't write his songs! He can't make a hit without songwriters and things like that,” I just laugh. Actually an artist having a songwriter doesn't mean anything and it doesn't take away anything from the artist. It's all the vibe, you might write a good song but you can't sing it and make it a hit. I still think that if Tekno sang ‘If’ it wouldn't be a hit. Davido actually brought his own vibe to the song. So the delivery of Davido is what made that song a hit. There's no way people would believe Tekno if he said 30 billion for the account but they believed it when Davido saïd it and liked it because he actually has the money.”
In essence, Don Jazzy is saying that an artist's ability to deliver a song and make it their own is what truly matters, not whether they wrote it themselves or had help from songwriters.
