Sokoto Government Dethrone Some Traditional Rulers
The Sokoto government dismissed 15 traditional leaders for a variety of offenses, and it is currently looking into 4 more
The committee led by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, which was entrusted with investigating the appointments of traditional leaders, renaming academic institutions, and dissolving parastatal governing boards, made recommendations that led to this decision.
Abubakar Bawa, the governor's press secretary, made the announcement of these dethronement.
As said by Bawa, “The District Heads of Unguwar Lalle, Yabo, Wamakko, Tullawa, Illela, Dogon Daji, Kebbe, Alkammu, and Giyawa have been relieved of their appointments due to offenses such as aiding insecurity, land racketeering, and the misappropriation of public properties.
“The District Heads of Marafan Tangaza, Sarkin Gabas Kalambaina, Bunun Gogono, Saekin Kudun Yar Tsakkuwa, Sarkin Tambuwal, and Sarkin Yamman Toroankawa have been removed as their appointments were found not to have followed due process.”
Several traditional chiefs, such as Abubakar Bukari Salame as Sarkin Arewan Salame, Ibrahim Dasuki Mohammed Maccido as Barayan Zaki, and Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar as Ciroman Sokoto, have managed to hold onto their positions despite these changes.
Alhaji Aminu Aliyu Balle and other incumbents who were unaffected by the committee's recommendations continue to serve as Sarkin Yamman Balle in the interim.
He went on to explain that, as part of administrative changes, the district heads of Sabon Birni and Binji have been moved to the districts of Gatawa and Bubkari, respectively, while seven other traditional leaders have remained in their positions.
Furthermore, inquiries of four additional traditional chiefs who are purportedly implicated in various transgressions are presently underway.
