THE governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, has authorized the payment of N309,584,041 for overseas scholarships for state students enrolled in programs in Egypt and India.

Alhaji Isah Abubakar-Tunga, the State Commissioner of Higher Education, made this declaration on Tuesday, April 23, at a briefing in Birnin Kebbi.

The Commissioner claims that over N200 million is being paid to 63 students studying in India and N81 million is being paid to 23 students studying in Egypt.

Furthermore, plans are underway to immediately settle the remaining international students' bills.

The Commissioner declared, “The sum of N228,150,148:00 is for 63 students studying in India, while N81,433,893:80 is for 23 students studying in Egypt.

“The remaining 50 foreign students shall have their expenses settled within the shortest possible time.”

The commissioner emphasized that the governor had made sure that all Kebbi State students enrolled in 36 postsecondary institutions around Nigeria were receiving local scholarships earlier in February.

He conveyed the gratitude of the ministry for the governor's outstanding work in the field of higher education.

Akintunde Sawyerr, the Nigerian Education Trust Fund's Executive Secretary, responded to queries about student loans in the interim.

He made it clear that students in need of these loans do not need to provide collateral.

The President of Nigeria signed the Access to Higher Education Bill into law in June with the intention of offering interest-free loans to deserving students enrolled in postsecondary education programs in Nigerian universities.

Sawyerr emphasized the significance of qualifying standards, stressing that although collateral is not necessary, applicants must fulfill certain legal requirements.

He underlined that the program's goal is to assist worthy people in continuing their education.
