TYPICALLY desert and unused to heavy rain and flash flooding, the storms flooded roads and produced hazardous conditions throughout the region.
According to a statement released by airport officials on Tuesday, flights into Dubai Airport have been temporarily diverted due to the “continuing exceptional weather event currently being experienced in the UAE.”
“Recovery will take some time,” the airport said on the social platform X. “We thank you for your patience and understanding while we work through these challenges.”
“More than 4.7 inches of rain fell in a day in the UAE, flooding streets across Dubai and sending water spilling into homes and businesses.
“The UAE's National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority urged people to stay home, advising that cars should be parked in ‘safe and elevated locations,"' away from flood- prone areas and places where water can accumulate.
The UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, mostly closed its schools in advance of the storm, and most government workers chose to work from home when feasible.
Although some workers did venture out, the majority stayed home, and several roads were covered in deeper-than-expected water, which resulted in sad occurrences of vehicles stalling out.
Extremely rainy weather this week also affected other countries of the Middle East, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
