Lagos Government Refutes Claims Of N70,000 Minimum Wage For Civil Servants

GOVERNOR Babajide Sanwo-Olu has not announced any plans to establish a new minimum wage for civil officials in the commercial hub of the country, according to an official statement from the Lagos State Government.

The minimum wage in Lagos State was reportedly increased to N70,000 by Sanwo-Olu, according to certain reports on social media on Thursday, April 25.

The commissioner of information for Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, clarified that no such declaration was made.

Omotoso went on to say that Governor Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed in the 'Eko Cares' launch in Ikeja on Wednesday, April 24, that workers had been getting a N35,000 salary award since January.

He said that as a result of this increased salary award, workers who previously received N35,000 a month are now receiving a total of N70,000.

The national minimum wage is currently N30,000, and talks to establish a new minimum wage is ongoing.

“I know that by the grace of God, very soon, we'll see a new minimum wage that will be approved for the federal government and for the state government,” the Lagos governor was quoted as saying in a statement.

“The civil servants and all public officers, they know that since January we have continued to pay the wage allowance of minimum of N35,000 over and above what they were earning before.

“People that were earning a minimum of N35,000 to N40,000 before, they are now earning over N70,000. So, it's important for people to know and for us to lay this thing very clearly.

“This government has doubled up and has not left its citizens on their own.”
