Dubai Flights Canceled At International Airport As Floods Destroys Runway [VIDEO]

THE United Arab Emirates' Dubai witnessed flooding and disruptions to airport operations on Tuesday due to a year's worth of rainfall.

Online footage showed the second busiest airport in the world, Dubai International Airport, its tarmac submerged while huge planes tried to fly through flooding.

The weather assessments at the airport on Tuesday indicate that about four inches (100 mm) of rain fell in just twelve hours, according to CNN.

The amount of rainfall was around what Dubai typically receives in a year, according to figures from the United Nations.

Several airlines announced flight delays and cancellations on Wednesday due to the floods that affected airport operations in the city.

While other parts of the UAE also witnessed significant rainfall, it was said that jets passing through the flooded airport resembled canoes more than anything else.

“Operations continue to be significantly disrupted. There is major flooding on access roads around Dubai leading to the airport,” the airport was quoted as saying.

As the floodwater surged and the roads turned into rivers, it was stated that the rain came down so swiftly and heavily that drivers had to get out of their cars.

The weather in Dubai and the rest of the UAE is hot and dry. Because of this, rainfall is rare and there is insufficient infrastructure to deal with harsh weather.

The lack of consistent rainfall has resulted in inadequate drainage on numerous highways and other sites, leading to flooding.

The city's deluge is linked to a broader storm system that is sweeping across Oman and Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.

According to experts, climate change brought on by humans will cause torrential rains to occur more frequently.
