Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has asked Nigerians to be patient with him while he attempts to resolve the nationwide power outages.
Speaking on Monday, March 11, at a press conference in Abuja, Adelabu said that the previous three weeks had been challenging for the nation and the industry because Nigerians had to deal with recurrent power outages.
He stated that the government is aiming to enhance power generation, but he urged Nigerians to be patient as the ministry addresses the power problems at their core.
He said the government aims to raise power generation to 6500 MegaWatts (MW) from the current 4500 (MW), but he asked Nigerians to be patient as the ministry addresses the underlying causes of the power outages.
“We are doing everything possible to make sure the situation reverses in no time. There is a crisis and the crises must be arrested. What we asked from Nigerians is to exercise a little patience to retain their trust and confidence in us that we can do this. Very soon, you will start singing our praises. When they accuse us now, when there is no power, it is very understandable because their complaints are legitimate.”
The minister expressed regret over the subpar performance displayed by distribution companies of electricity and pledged to penalize underperforming DisCos.
He revealed that in order to allow other businesses to take over underserved communities, the ministry is planning to balkanize the coverage area of some of the Discos.
