Vincent Enyeama Declared Greatest African Goalkeeper Of All Time By IFFHS
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has named Vincent Enyeama as the greatest African goalkeeper of all time.
The best African goalkeeper of all time, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), is Vincent Enyeama, a former goalkeeper for the Super Eagles.
The former Lille goalie won the special gong by defeating other illustrious African goalies like Essam El-Hadary (Egypt), Thomas N'Kono (Cameroon), and Joseph-Antoine Bell (Cameroon).
Enyeama had a successful career spanning more than 20 years, playing for Ibom Stars, Enyimba, Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Bnei Yehuda, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Lille, and Maccabi Tel Aviv, according to Wikipedia.
In addition, the 42-year-old retired goalie played for Nigeria from 2002 until October 2015; he captained the team from 2013 until his retirement from international football in 2015.
With 101 appearances for the national team, Enyeama continues to hold the record for most caps for Super Eagles players. He was a member of the 2013 squad that captured Nigeria's third and final Africa Cup of Nations championship.
The rise to fame of Vincent Enyeama
Enyeama has won numerous individual honors to go along with his stellar goalkeeping career, including three titles as the Israeli Premier League's best goalkeeper.
The 42-year-old goalie, who played for Lille in the 2013–2014 season and won the best goalkeeper award in Ligue 1, is a repeat winner of the CAF Champions League, having won it twice with Enyimba prior to moving to Europe.
Regarded as the best goalkeeper in Nigeria, Enyeama also owns the record for the most shutouts in a season in the top flight of France, having recorded 21 shutouts in 2013–2014.
Sports Brief earlier revealed that Enyeama has disassociated himself from a reunion with the Super Eagles, dispelling rumors of his reunion with the team by revealing he would not coach Nigeria's goalkeepers at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former goalie had hinted on social media that he was staying in his nation's national team's camp for the continental championship in Ivory Coast.
The post excited some fans, who speculated that the former goalie might be in Abu Dhabi before the event, helping the Nigerian team train.
