Reps Approve The Judicial Officials' Wage Bill
Reps approve the judicial officials' wage bill, which will give CJN a monthly salary of N5.39 million.
A measure mandating an upward assessment of the pay, benefits, and allowances of those holding judicial office nationwide was approved by the House of Representatives.
The bill included a monthly package worth N5.39 million for the Nigerian Chief Justice, or CJN.
According to President Bola Tinubu's executive bill, which was presented to the lower legislative chamber on Tuesday, March 19, the President of the Court of Appeal will receive a monthly package worth N4.48 million, while the other justices of the Supreme Court will receive a total package worth N4.21 million.
The National Assembly was requested in a letter from President Tinubu to approve a new measure that would give judicial personnel nationwide increased pay and benefits.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read the letter aloud in plenary on Tuesday, March 19.
The goal of the proposed law is to set compensation, allowances, and other ancillary benefits for judges.
The CJN is entitled to a basic wage of N1.12 million per month or N13.46 million annually, according to a breakdown of the bill.
The bill's provisions grant the CJN an additional N51.16 million in annual regular allowances or N4.26 million in monthly regular allowances, totaling N5.39 million in monthly earnings for the top law officer in the country.
Additionally, the CJN is eligible for non-regular benefits such as N673 million Leave Allowance (if applicable), N142,500 Duty Tour Allowance (per night), $2,000 Estacode (per night), N80,78 million Severance Gratuity (after successfully completing tenure), and N53.85 million Motor Vehicle Loan (to be repaid before expiration of tenure). The NJC pool will be used to pay the Professional Development Assistant.
The basic yearly remuneration for other Supreme Court justices is N9.91 million, or N826,116 per month.
The Supreme Court judges are entitled to regular allowances of N4.21 million per month or N50.56 million annually.
Each justice of the Supreme Court is entitled to a regular grant of N50.56 million per year or N4.21 million per month.
According to the bill, each of them is also entitled to non-regular allowances such as N9.91 million in rent per year, N4,96 million in leave allowance (if applicable), N100,000 in duty tour allowance per night, $1,300 per night, N29.74 million severance gratuity (after successfully completing their tenure), N29.74 million in furniture allowance, and N39.65 million in motor vehicle loan (to be repaid before the end of their tenure). The NJC pool is to be used to pay the Professional Development Assistant.
Tax-deferred payments are to be used to provide security and utilities.
In the meantime, the basic annual pay for the President of the Court of Appeal is N9. 91 million, or N826,116 per month.
Each Justice of the Court of Appeal will receive a basic salary of N7.99 million annually or N665,475 monthly if the bill is approved.
They would each be eligible for regular stipend of N3.73 million per month or N44.72 million annually.
In addition, each of them is entitled to the following non-regular allowances: N7.99 million in rent per year; N3,99 million in leave allowance when applicable; N85,500 in duty tour allowance per night; $1,100 estacode per night; N23.96 million in severance gratuity upon successful completion of tenure; N23.96 million in furniture allowance; and N31.94 million as a motor vehicle loan, which must be paid back before the end of the tenure period. The NJC pool is used to fund the Professional Development Assistant.
The following individuals are eligible for the same compensation, benefits, and perks: Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, President of the National Industrial Court, Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court, Grand Khadi FCT Sharia Court of Appeal, Resident FCT Customary Court of Appeal, Chief Judge of the State High Court, Grand Kadi State Sharia Court of Appeal, and President State Customary Court of Appeal.
The basic compensation for each Justice of the Court of Appeal is N7.99 million per year, or N665,475 each month.
Additionally, each of them is entitled to N3.52 million in monthly regular allowances or N42.32 million in annual regular allowances.
In addition, each of them is entitled to non-regular allowances such as N799 million in rent per year; N3.99 million in leave allowance when applicable; N85,500 in duty tour allowance per night; $1,100 estacode per night; N23.96 million in severance gratuity upon successful completion of tenure; N23.96 million in furniture allowance; and N31.94 million in motor vehicle loan, which must be paid back prior to the expiration of tenure. The NJC pool will be used to fund the Professional Development Assistant position.
The same pay, benefits, and perks are due to judges of the Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, Federal Court of Appeals, Federal Customary Court of Appeal, State High Court, State Customary Court of Appeal, Kadis FCT Sharia Court of Appeal, and Kadis State Sharia Court of Appeal.
They are each entitled to a basic wage of N7.22 million per year or N601,880 each month.
Additionally, each of them is eligible for N3.07 million in monthly regular allowances or N36,84 million in annual regular allowances.
The non-regular allowances that each of them is entitled to are N7.22 million in rent (yearly); N3.61 million in leave allowance (if applicable); N57,000 in duty tour allowance (per night); $600 in estacode (per night); N21.68 million in severance gratuity (after a successful tenure completion); N21.68 million in furniture allowance; and N28.89 million in motor vehicle loan (to be repaid before the expiration of tenure). The NJC pool is where the Professional Development Assistant is paid.
