As Diomaye Faye leads the race for president of Senegal, President Macky Sall congratulates him

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the opposition candidate, is about to be declared the winner of the election on Sunday, March 24. Outgoing Senegalese President Macky Sall has congratulated her.

The expected victory was applauded by President Sall as a victory for Senegalese democracy.

President Sall has acknowledged Faye with this gesture, and his hand-picked successor, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, has already contacted Faye to accept defeat.

Even though Faye, a 44-year-old member of the party led by Ousmane Sonko, was recently imprisoned a few days before the election, she has emerged as a strong candidate.

Supporters expressed hope for a new era under his leadership as he gained initial success in the first round of vote counting, sparking joyous celebrations in Dakar, the country's capital.

Senegal's political landscape has changed significantly with this election, since President Macky Sall decided not to run for office again.

The 62-year-old former prime minister Amadou Ba was the nominee put up by the ruling coalition.

However Faye's momentum seems to have struck a deep chord with voters who are looking for change, even if Ba's campaign expressed confidence in pursuing a runoff.

The importance of this historic political process is underscored as Senegal prepares for the prospect of a runoff election as provisional results keep coming in.

The nation anxiously awaits the final results, which are expected to be released on Tuesday, March 26, as they have the power to influence Senegal's future course.

Faye's personal life is interesting in the midst of the political frenzy since he is married to two spouses, Marie Khone and Absa.
