Joshua Defeats Ngannou Via Brutal Second-round Knockout
Anthony Joshua, the two-time world champion, defeated mixed martial arts pro Francis Ngannou in just the second round of their highly anticipated heavyweight fight on Saturday. His promoter promptly proclaimed Joshua the “number one” fighter in the division.
In a brutal and quick display of punching power, Joshua put his Cameroonian opponent on the canvas twice in the first round and once more in the second.
Prior to the fight, Joshua had won three straight heavyweight titles as the unified champion of the WBO, WBA, and IBF.
Oleksandr Usyk, who will challenge Fury for the undisputed heavyweight title in Saudi Arabia in May, defeated him twice in a row prior to that.
Weary fans were treated to a spectacular start when Joshua viciously sent Ngannou to the canvas in the first round with a right to the chin, even though the fight didn't officially begin until 3:30 am local time.
When the Cameroonian was knocked down again in the second round, barely making it past the count, things went south for him.
He was thrown to the canvas for the third and final time, and his resistance only lasted a few more moments.
Ngannou was helped back onto his stool after spending some time on his back and requiring medical attention inside the ring.
The MMA star, whose rags-to-riches tale had enthralled the sport, was allegedly receiving $50 million for his fight with Joshua, 34.
Ngannou was employed as a child laborer in a sand quarry for less than $2 per day while growing up in extreme poverty.
He then traveled to Europe, spending the night on the streets of Paris before being taken in by a local coach.
