Gunmen Attack Niger settlement, Killing 21 Residents
In a horrific attack in Madaka, in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, no fewer than twenty-one people have lost their lives. The perpetrators are suspected terrorists.
On Thursday, March 21, the attackers—who are thought to be armed terrorists—ransacked the village late into the night in the evening while the busy local market was in full flow.
Many people were reportedly kidnapped by the attackers, who also set fire to about fifty residences and an unknown number of cars and motorcycles.
Alhaji Isah Bawale, the Madaka district head, has verified the unfortunate event and noted the significant loss experienced by the community, but State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Wasiu Abiodun has not yet made an official statement regarding the tragedy.
Madaka has frequently been the target of bandit attacks despite being well-known for its abundant mineral, talc, and gold reserves.
A similar incident rocked the peace in Katsina State's Kankara Local Government Area when gunmen ambushed an eighteen-seater bus registered 14B-300-KT that was transporting passengers from Funtua on behalf of the Katsina State Transport Authority.
Witnesses state that during the ambush that occurred between the Burdugau and Yargoje settlements, just before Kankara town, a considerable number of passengers—mostly those going between Funtua and Katsina LGAS—were abducted.
