Gov. Buni Accuses Porous Borders Of Increasing Insecurity
The governor of Yobe State, Mai Buni, has connected unmanned borders to Nigeria's rising level of violence.
This was revealed by Buni on Thursday at the Government House in Damaturum during his reception with James Sunday, the recently assigned Assistant Controller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, who is in charge of Zone “C.”
The governor claims that the nation is lax on border patrol, which facilitates illegal immigration by foreigners.
He went on to say that, among other illegal activities, the absence of border patrol in Nigeria encourages the growth of terrorism, kidnappings, banditry, and conflicts between farmers and herders.
“Today, the border issue is even taking centre stage even in American politics. Some of the candidates are now talking about border control. However, in this country, we are taking the issue very lightly. If you don't control your borders, you leave your country porous and open to all sorts of crimes. We have to come out with acceptable templates to make this work. We will support you to make sure our people are protected,” he said.
The Emir of Damaturu, Shehu El-kanemi, praised the Nigeria Immigration Service for its hard efforts in rooting out foreigners, particularly during the height of the country's insurgencies, during a speech about the insecurity faced at his palace.
