FG forms committee to create national digital identity to enhance governance
A steering group for the Nigeria digital identification for development ecosystem initiative has been established by the federal government through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
According to a release, George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (OSGF), presided over the steering committee's inauguration on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to Akume, the committee represents a significant advancement in Nigeria's efforts to achieve digital transformation and promote inclusive development throughout the country.
“The steering committee is poised to guide the strategic direction of the Nigeria Digital ID4D project,” he said.
“The project's vision is to establish a secure and verifiable digital identity for every Nigerian, thereby enhancing service delivery, governance, and creating opportunities for growth in the digital economy.”
Additionally, Akume predicted that the project would transform service access and identity.
According to him, in order to guarantee the project's success, issues with data protection, accessibility, and citizen participation must also be resolved.
“The Nigeria Digital ID4D project holds immense promise in revolutionizing identification and access to services,” he said.
The goal of the digital identification initiative, according to NIMC's director-general and CEO Abisoye Coker-Odusote, is to empower citizens and promote socioeconomic growth.
Coker-Odusote was as optimistic about the scheme's revolutionary potential.
“Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Program represents a bold and ambitious initiative aimed at leveraging digital technologies to enhance service delivery, improve governance, and unlock opportunities for our citizens,” she added.
The head of NIMC also expressed gratitude to all parties involved for their steadfast support and dedication to the national project.
In order to realize the goal of a Nigeria empowered by technology, she stated that the commission looks forward to collaborating closely with the steering committee and other partners.
“The steering committee's mandate extends beyond policy formulation to fostering a collaborative governance structure that will oversee the project's implementation,” Coker- Odusote said.
“The committee is tasked with ensuring that the project aligns with international best practices and respects the privacy and rights of all Nigerians.”
The OSGF, in his capacity as chairman; Wale Edun, the minister of finance; Atiku Bagudu, the minister of budget and national planning; and Bosun Tijani, the minister of communications and digital economy, are listed as committee members in the announcement.
Among the others are the secretary Coker-Odusote, the minister of health Muhammad Ali Pate, and the minister of education Tahir Mamman.
The committee was established a few days after it was purported that a dubious company had accessed Nigeria's identification database, which is maintained by NIMC.
In the meantime, the federal government had established a steering group for the same project in 2020, during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
