Ethiopian Bank Trying To Retrieve Millions After Glitch That Results To Million Withdrawals
Customers of Ethiopia's biggest bank may face legal action after the bank responded to significant withdrawals due to a technological issue.
Customers who benefited from a recent system glitch have received a strong warning from the head of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), the country's largest commercial bank.
The head of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), the country's biggest commercial bank, has sent out a strong warning to clients who took advantage of a recent system error.
Customers exploited the problem by withdrawing more money than existed in their accounts or moving it to other accounts.
“There is no way that they can escape because they are our customers and these are digital transactions,” stressed CBE President Abe Sano, warning individuals who do not return the unlawful payments to face legal consequences. “We are familiar with them. They can be located and held legally liable for their actions.”
Customers of CBE rushed to access funds as a result of the error, and the state-owned bank eventually stopped the transactions.
Although it is believed that the amount taken out without authorization was less than first stated, CBE is carrying out an audit to ascertain the precise amount.
Even if some legal transactions took place during the glitch, CBE is determined to take legal action against those who profited illegally.
Some people are refusing to comply, with social media posts even encouraging others to retain the cash, despite bank warnings and posters displayed in cafeterias imploring pupils to return the money.
More than 38 million account holders are served by CBE, and the company is currently identifying and notifying the authorities about any consumers who benefited from the glitch.
The bank is prepared to hold anyone who don't return the money freely accountable, even if they won't be prosecuted.
