ECOWAS: Nigeria Restores Power To Niger Republic Following A Seven-Month Blackout

Nigeria is now providing electricity to the Niger Republic, after a seven-month break

This move comes after the Economic Community of West African States decided to remove Niger's sanctions in an effort to lessen.

The Nigerian government has restored electricity back to the Niger Republic after the sanctions were removed, for the first time in seven months.

According to ECOWAS, it decided “to lift with immediate effect the following sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger: Closure of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Niger; Institution of ECOWAS no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger; Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger.

“Freeze of all service transaction including utility services and electricity to Niger Republic; Freeze of assets of the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks; Freeze of assets of the Niger State, State Enterprises and Parastatals in Commercial Banks; Suspension of Niger from all financial assistance and transactions with all financial institutions, particularly, EBID and BOAD; Travel ban on government officials and their family members.”

The goal of this action is to lessen the suffering of the Nigerien people and comes after the Economic Community of West African States decided to lift sanctions against Niger.

Following the military takeover of President Mohamed Bazoum's government in July 2023, Nigeria stopped providing electricity to its neighbor speaking French.

A longstanding trade agreement between Nigeria and Niger allows seven of the eight states in Niger to rely on electricity supplies from Nigeria.
