Artist Regains Hands Through Delhi's First-Ever Bilateral Surgery

Landmark Moment! Painter Regains Hands Through Delhi’s First-Ever Bilateral Hand Transplant

Doctors in Delhi, India, successfully performed the city's first bilateral hand transplant on a 45-year-old painter who lost both hands in a horrific train accident a few years ago.

How they did it: A team of 11 doctors performed the procedure on Raj Kumar at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on Jan. 19.

A painter who lost both hands in a train accident in 2020 had a successful bilateral hand transplant performed by medical professionals at Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, India, in a medical first.

Many Indian media outlets referred to the 12-hour procedure as a miracle. It involved painstakingly joining every blood vessel, muscle, tendon, and nerve between the donor's hands and the recipient's arms.

Meena Mehta, the head of an esteemed school in South Delhi, kindly donated the hands after pledging her organs in the event of her demise. Three people's lives have already been changed by her kidneys, liver, and corneas; now, the painter has hope because of her hands.
