African Games: Nigeria Breaks Record In Mixed 4x400m And Wins Gold
Nigeria sets a new record and wins gold in the mixed 4x400m in African Games
Nigeria emerged victorious in the mixed 4x400 meters relay, at the 2024 African Games in Ghana.
Emmanuel Ojeli, Patience Okon-George, Adeyemi Sikiru, and Omolara Ogunmakinju, the quartet, also broke the previous African record on Tuesday night with a time of 3:13.26.
The team broke the previous mark of 3:13.60, which Nigeria had also established in the Olympic mixed relay semifinal.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi successfully defended his title and won gold in the men's shot put with a distance of 20.06 meters.
Mostafa Hassan and Mohamed Hamza of Egypt finished in second and third place, respectively, with throws of 20.70 meters and 20.29 meters, one meter ahead of Enekwechi's.
Ruth Usoro won the gold medal in the women's triple jump competition with an unbeatable leap of 13.80 meters on her third try.
She overcame Senegal's Saly Sal and Kenya's Winny Bil, who took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Elizabeth Anyanacho won the women's under-65kg Taekwondo championship, defeating Aya Shehata of Egypt.
Anyanacho had placed third in the same division in the African Games in Rabat, Morocco in 2019.
However, in the men's 100-meter race, Usheoritse Itsekiri was only able to take home a silver medal. He finished second in 10.23 seconds, just behind the gold medal winner, Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon.
Bronze in the women's 100-meter race at the African Games made Olayinka Olajide the first Nigerian to place on the podium in 12 years.
Gina Bass of the Gambia won the race with a time of 11.36 seconds, followed by Maia McCoy of Liberia with 11.49 seconds.
