U.S. Bureau will look into Hushpuppi's birthday feast in the prison

According to reports, the US Bureau of Prisons announced that it will investigate Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas, a Nigerian prisoner serving an 11-year sentence, following the release of a viral video purporting to show Abbas and others having a feast inside what was purported to be his detention facility in Fort Dix, New Jersey.

The jail facility told Peoples Gazette on Thursday night, “We take these matters seriously,” and that the “investigative department” would be in charge of the investigation to find out the truth—or lack thereof—about the viral video.

Recall that on January 22, 2024, Tunde Adekunle, also known as Tunde Ednut, celebrated his birthday. Tunde Adekunle is an ally of Hushpuppi. While supporters and other celebrities celebrated the birthday in Nigeria and some US states, a video emerged purporting to show a feast of various foods in what looked to be a prison setting, including jollof rice, pasta, and soda drinks.

Analysis and reports state that it displayed a white-sheeted bed and a grey double bunk. The features, which evoked the interior of a prison, fuelled rumors that Abbas was enjoying himself immensely while his friend was incarcerated for his birthday.

Nigerians who knew Abbas from the viral video insisted that he was the one speaking. For his part in a multimillion-dollar international fraud scheme in 2022, Abbas, 41, was found guilty. After being detained in Dubai, Hushpuppi was extradited to the US to face charges.

In an effort to receive a reduced sentence during the first few years of his incarceration, Abbas participated in prison education programs and actively cleaned the prison, becoming one of the best toilet cleaners in the institution.

Abbas's request to have his 11-year sentence reviewed and reduced was denied by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Los Angeles on January 19. Abbas's request was based on his good behavior during his incarceration thus far.
