UK-based Nigerian Doctor Claims £12000 In Housing Benefits Scam
UK-Based Nigerian Doctor, Olubunmi Claims £12K In Housing Benefits Scam For Non-Existent Flat.
Olubunmi Adeagbo-Sheikh, a Nigerian doctor working in the UK, is alleged to have carried out a housing benefits scam by faking a landlord and a tenancy agreement in order to obtain approximately £12,000.
According to the Daily Mail, Adeagbo-Sheikh made the false claim while undergoing his medical training in the UK between September 2018 and September 2019.
It was alleged that he had given false information, saying that he was renting an apartment in Gipsy Hill, London, for £900 a month from a landlord who did not exist, Paul Baker. Investigations, however, showed that the address he gave was false.
Adeagbo-Sheikh was the victim of a fraud in which the Department for Work and Pensions paid him £1,217.82 a month, which included housing benefits.
The doctor lived with his mother in Swanley, Kent, not at the purported London address, as authorities discovered during an investigation that exposed the deception.
The doctor was arrested in October 2019 after prosecutors discovered that his Universal Credit application had been fraudulently completed.
A copy of the fraudulent application and fictitious tenancy agreements pertaining to the nonexistent address were among the other pieces of evidence that the police search turned up.
The search also turned up conversations on WhatsApp about fabricated claims for universal credit.
Adeagbo-Sheikh received a 12-month community order after he pled guilty to dishonestly fabricating a statement in order to receive benefits. He was also required to perform 100 hours of unpaid labor.
The judge recognized that, given Adeagbo-Sheikh's status as a licensed physician as of 2020, a significant jail term might have an effect on his medical career.
The judge emphasized the need for accountability and the negative effects of Adeagbo-Sheikh's behavior on society, calling Adeagbo-Sheikh's actions a reckless attempt to take advantage of the system for financial gain during a trying time.
