Police Provide Update On Kwara Monarch Murder

The Onikoro of Koro, Oba Aremu Olusegun Cole, was killed by gunmen who broke into his palace on Thursday night and took two other people, including his wife. The Kwara State Police Command has responded to the news.
The Command promised to apprehend and punish the monarch's killers in a statement released on Friday morning by its spokesperson, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun. The Command stated that it has started an investigation.
Toun asked the agitated citizens of Koro Town to maintain their composure, promising to take all necessary measures to apprehend those responsible for their monarch's demise.
The text of the statement says, “It is with deep sorrow that I confirm the unfortunate incident that unfolded today in Koro, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State. Gunmen invaded the palace of the Onikoro, Oba Aremu Olusegun Cole, resulting in the tragic loss of his life and the abduction of his wife and one other.
“The Kwara State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Victor OLAIYA (psc+), expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire community affected by this heinous act. Our prayers are with them during this challenging time.
“Immediate and intensive investigations are underway to apprehend those criminals for this reprehensible act. We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought swiftly to justice.
“Security measures in the Koro community have been intensified, and tactical teams are being mobilised to beef up security to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
“The CP has urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as we work tirelessly to unravel this matter; arrest and charge the culprits to court. The Kwara State Police Force remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” concluded the statement.
Gunmen stormed the palace of Olukoro of Koro in the Ekiti local government area of Kwara State, on Thursday night, killing General Segun Aremu (rtd), the community's traditional ruler.
The monarch's wife and two other people were also taken away by the gunmen.
The governor's chief press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaiye, released a press statement late on Thursday night, confirming the killing of the monarch and the kidnapping of three other people, including his wife.
“Kwara State Governor, Abdul Rahman Abdul Razaq, has condemned the killing of Olukoro of Koro in Ekiti Local Government, HRH retd. General Segun Aremu.
“The monarch was reportedly shot dead in his palace on Thursday night by some unknown gunmen, who also whisked away his wife and two others.
“The governor condemned the development, which he said was reckless, shocking, and abominable.
“He charged the security agencies not to spare any resources to track down the perpetrators, free the spouse and others taken away, and bring them to book.
“We will certainly get the perpetrators and ensure that this is their last crime against humanity. My profound condolences go out to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always,” the governor said in a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye.
