Nigeria Restores Back The Niger Republic's Electricity Supply
Nigeria has agreed to restore electricity supply to Niger Republic as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) yesterday lifted the sanctions on Niger, Mali, Burkina-Faso and Guinea.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) lifted its sanctions against Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea yesterday, and Nigeria agreed to restore electricity supply to the Niger Republic.
Sanctions were removed following the extraordinary ECOWAS summit, which took place in the State House Conference Hall in Abuja and addressed the political, security, and peace conditions in the subregion.
As one of the sanctions imposed by the ECOWAS against the coupists in the nation, Nigeria cut off the electricity supply to Niger Republic in August of last year.
The pain of not having electricity in their nation was felt by the people of Niger.
President Bola Tinubu was asked to restore electricity back to the Niger Republic last November by senators from northern Nigeria who were members of the Northern Senators Forum.
The head of the ECOWAS, Nigeria's Bola Tinubu, had earlier in the day demanded that the economic sanctions against Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea be lifted.
According to him, the goal of the sanctions was to force the nations to the bargaining table.
He clarified that the principles of regional security, social stability, democratic governance, political freedom, widespread prosperity, and sustainable economic development through equitable opportunities for all West Africans served as the foundation for ECOWAS's actions.
He said there was never any intention to stifle or undermine the legitimate political aspirations of any member state or further the interests of any outside party, and that neither hatred nor a covert motive influenced the actions taken.
Tinubu requested that the ECOWAS allow food, medication, and other humanitarian supplies to reach the people of these nations, particularly the most vulnerable.
According to him, for Nigera, “This will also mean the prompt resumption of export of electricity to Niger.”
