Blackout Looms As AEDC Threatens To Disconnect Presidential Villa Electricity

The company said the Presidential Villa owes the sum of N923,873,150 as an outstanding debt for electricity charges.

Nigeria's presidential mansion and other properties will allegedly be disconnected by Abuja Electricity Distribution Company due to a debt of N923 million.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has threatened to cut off the Presidential Villa's electricity supply as well as that of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) due to an outstanding debt of N47.1 billion.

According to the company, the Presidential Villa has an unpaid debt of N923,873,150 related to electricity charges.

The AEDC listed the unpaid electricity debts of government ministries, departments, and agencies as of December 2023 in a disconnection notice on Monday.

The MDAs were given ten days to pay their bills and comply, failing which they would be disconnected and face a blackout starting on February 28, 2024. According to the document, the electricity distribution company claimed it was compelled to disclose the specifics of the long-standing debts for the services provided. The AEDC emphasized that because its “prior attempts to make them honour their obligations have not achieved the desired result,” it is now necessary to publish the unpaid electricity bill.
