Lionel Messi has been crowned The Best FIFA Men's Player 2023

Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe were not included in the Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year award, which went to Lionel Messi for the third time.

The incredible years that both Haaland and Mbappe had meant that the football icon was not expected to win the trophy.

Nevertheless, one should be cautious when evaluating Messi, as the World Cup victor was acknowledged for his contributions with both Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami, in addition to his Argentina national team.

Thierry Henry, Messi's former Barcelona teammate and show host, accepted the trophy on the Argentine's behalf since Messi was not in London to accept it. Messi's efforts on the evening were acknowledged in more ways than just the award.

Along with fellow nominees Haaland and Mbappe, as well as numerous City players like John Stones, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Kevin De Bruyne, and Bernardo Silva, the 36-year-old was also included in the FIFA FIFPRO Men's World XI.

While debating whether Haaland or Messi should have taken home the Ballon d'Or at the end of the previous season, City manager Pep Guardiola may have best captured the sentiment. Some may believe that the other contenders were more deserving.

“I always said that the Ballon d'Or had to be two sections: one for Messi and one for the others,” Guardiola quipped in October.

“But of course, Messi, if you tell me the worst season of Messi it is the best for the rest of them. Both deserve it.

“Egotistically I would say I want Erling because he helped us to achieve what we achieved. I would love it but I won't tell you it's unfair if Leo wins.

“It's nice that many players for Man City will be there for the first time in many years and challenging for these trophies. That makes us so proud for our organisation.”
