FG Steps In And Grants 13 New Licenses For Power Generation And Distribution
The Federal Government says it has issued 13 new licences for the generation of off-grid and embedded power
According to the Federal Government, 13 new licenses have been granted for the production of embedded and off-grid power, independent distribution of electricity, and electricity trading.
13 new power generation, distribution, and trading licenses were announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its report.
In its report, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) announced the issuance of thirteen new power generation, distribution, and trading licenses.
These are Daybreak Power Solutions Limited, which was granted eight licenses for a range of off-grid power generation projects in Lagos, Abia, Borno, Kano, Oyo, and Abuja; Ekiti Independent Power Project, which was granted a license to develop a 5MW gas-fired embedded power project in Ekiti State; and Olokiti Power Distribution Limited, which was granted a license to operate an Independent Electricity Distribution Network in Ekiti State.
The others are Island Power Limited, which was granted a license to develop a 10 MW embedded gas-fired power project in Lagos, and Ember Power Limited, which was granted a license for the trading of electricity.
A license to operate an independent electricity distribution network in Lagos State was also granted to Energy Company of Nigeria Limited.
The new licenses were granted in the third quarter of 2023, according to NERC, because the total amount of electricity that the licensees were expected to generate was 40.9 megawatts.
Five new off-grid generation licences totalling 8.81MW and one new licence for embedded generation of 5MW were issued during the review period, according to the most recent NERC third quarter 2023 report's “Licences and Permits Issued or Renewed” section.
“For activities that do not require licenses based on the provisions of sections 65-68 of the Electricity Act 2023.”
