Burkina Faso, Mali, And Niger Continue To Be Members Of ECOWAS
Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have not yet formally notified the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission that they intend to leave the regional organization.
It was responding to the three Member States' military juntas' sudden withdrawal from ECOWAS. Following the overthrow of the democratically elected government in Niger, the three nations announced the development on Sunday. They had been considering the formation of a counterforce, the Alliance of Sahel States, against the regional bloc.
President Bola Tinubu of ECOWAS had threatened military action if the Niger junta refused to cede power. However, as Mali and Burkina Faso promised to defend Niger, the regime held firm. The three Sahelian leaders announced on Sunday that their countries had made the sovereign decision to leave ECOWAS.
However, the ECOWAS Commission stated in a press release on Sunday night in Abuja that it has been collaborating with the three nations to restore constitutional order. It emphasized that the Authority of Heads of State and Government was still dedicated to reaching a diplomatic resolution to the political deadlock and that Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso continued to be significant members of the Community.
The communique reads: “The attention of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Commission) has been drawn to a statement broadcast on the National Televisions of Mali and Niger announcing the decision of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to withdraw from ECOWAS.
“The ECOWAS Commission is yet to receive any direct formal notification from the three Member States about their intention to withdraw from the Community. The ECOWAS Commission, as directed by the Authority of Heads of State and Government, has been working assiduously with these countries for the restoration of constitutional order. Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali remain important members of the Community and the Authority remains committed to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse. The ECOWAS Commission remains seized with the development and shall make further pronouncements as the situation evolves.”
