The Federal Government has budgeted a staggering N138,066,187 to combat fake news and print calendars

The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation of the Federal Government would spend N138,066,187 to fight fake news and print calendars.

A portion of the funds will also be utilized to arrange ministers' media appearances and to plan interactions with social media influencers, among other things.

The specifics of the 2024 Appropriations Bill, which is presently pending before the National Assembly, include this.

During the government of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Lai Mohammed, a former minister of information and culture, started a campaign against fake news.

Muhammad said that Nigeria has progressed from “ordinary” fake news to “deep” fake news in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in 2021. He claimed that the latter was being used to wage war against the government and its personnel.

He had also mentioned that the early propagators of deepfake news were mostly unknown internet publications. He regretted that some mainstream media and other respectable publications had jumped on the bandwagon, but added that those proven guilty will face consequences.

A “special enlightenment campaign on government's programmes and policies, testimonial series to gauge the impact of government policies on the citizenry” has been given N24.5 million in the 2024 budget.

“Advocacy against fake news, hate speech, farmers-herders clashes, banditry, rape, etc.”

The information also revealed that N40 million would be spent by the government to create calendars; N30 million was allocated for media relations and engagement abroad; and N20.7 million was allocated for interactions between ministers, influencers, and analysts with the media on print and social media.

Additionally, the government said that it would invest N21.7 million on social media platform development and platform networking.

The National Assembly received the 2024 appropriations budget last week from President Bola Tinubu.
