“The tanker is expected to arrive on December 7 around 8 p.m.; this shipment marks the initiation of crude supplies for the refinery's operations”

On Thursday, the first shipment of crude oil is expected to arrive at the Dangote Oil Refinery, marking the official start of fuel production.

This was verified by S&P Global in a brief statement, which said that on December 6, the OTIS tanker, carrying 950,000 barrels of Nigerian Agbami crude, sailed.

The Suezmax tanker represents the first crude supply to Dangote's cutting-edge refinery as it prepares for production. It was chartered by the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPC Ltd).

“The tanker is expected to arrive on December 7 around 8 p.m.; this shipment marks the initiation of crude supplies for the refinery's operations,” the statement said.

The tanker is currently en route to Lekki, Lagos State, the closest land port to Dangote's offshore crude receiving terminal, according to S&P Global.

According to a report by Persecond News, the NNPC Ltd. planned to supply the refinery with six million barrels of crude oil in December as part of its efforts to increase domestic refining and achieve energy security in the nation.

The oil company will begin supplying crude oil to the Dangote refinery and has already acquired an equity stake in the facility.

Aliko Dangote declared on November 26 that the refinery will start up in December 2023.

Dangote stated that the eagerly anticipated refinery will begin operations with 350,000 barrels per day and verified that an agreement has been reached for the first shipment of roughly 6 million barrels of crude oil, scheduled for delivery in December 2023.

According to Section 109 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, refineries, such as the Dangote Refinery and the NNPC refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna, as well as the modular refineries dispersed throughout the nation, are required to supply domestic crude oil.

The aforementioned section stipulates that the domestic market will only receive crude oil supplies from willing buyers and sellers.
