Team members of Sunshine Stars suffered serious injuries after gunmen ambushed their bus
Thursday, December 7, 2023, saw an unknown gunman attack the Sunshine Stars bus on the Benin-Ore expressway in Ondo State, injuring the football team manager, players, and other officials.
Following the attack, the squad released a statement stating that they had traveled from their headquarters in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, to Benin, Edo State, in order to attend the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) game versus Bendel Insurance this coming weekend.
“It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers, that our team was attacked a few minutes ago along Ore-Benin Expressway to honour an Elite League tie against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.
“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack; our team manager and other club officials, including players, are seriously injured,” the team said.
A team member was seen in some of the viral photos lying down on a hospital bed with what seemed to be a gunshot wound to his stomach. In addition, bullets destroyed the team's bus's body and glasses.
The club added that the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel assisted in transporting the “seriously injured” individuals to a local hospital.
“It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individual to a nearby hospital. We hope you join us in prayers,” the club noted.
