Peoples Gazette first reported, that a federal appellate judge passed away just as the procedures for his nomination to the Supreme Court got underway.

Sources in the judiciary, from his hometown of Makurdi, said; Justice Joseph Shagbaor Ikyegh departed on Wednesday night. He was sixty-five. Ikyegh was the division president of Port Harcourt when, according to sources, he abruptly collapsed in front of his family and was declared dead.

His demise occurred many weeks after the Ogun political opposition charged him with accepting monetary bribes to support Governor Dapo Abiodun's contentious reelection.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party claimed that Mr. Abiodun's first certification by INEC was based on a technical point. Mr. Ikyegh led the panel that affirmed the verdict of a lower tribunal. On the panel of three judges, he was joined by another.

The final judge, Jane Esienanwan Inyang, dissented from the decision, stating that Mr. Abiodun's continued governorship was unwarranted. The primary opponent of Mr. Abiodun in the March 18 governorship election, Ladi Adebutu, swiftly appealed the case to the Supreme Court.

The decision, according to judiciary watchdogs, was one of the most contentious election petition rulings this season. Family members and friends characterized Mr. Ikyegh as a finely tuned judge who dedicated his life to serving the Nigerian people with justice, while Mr. Abiodun refuted any accusations of judicial meddling. An NJC representative acknowledged that there was an unanswered petition, but they would not comment further.

Mr. Ikyegh, who was born in 1958, was one of the judges scheduled to be elevated to the rank of associate justice of the Supreme Court. The process began a few days ago and was anticipated to be finished by December 31, 2023.
