The Dangote Refinery missed its deadline for refining diesel and jet (aviation) fuel, according to sources

These sources have linked it to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company's (NNPC) Limited incapacity to meet an earlier agreement by providing the Dangote Refinery with 300,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

The refinery was supposed to start refining diesel and jet fuel by October 2023, and gasoline by November 2023, according to a September 2023 exclusive interview with Devakumar Edwin, Executive Director at Dangote Group.

He had stated at the time that the Dangote refinery would start producing up to 370,000 barrels of diesel and jet fuel per day in October 2023, after receiving its first cargo of oil in the coming weeks.

He added that the refinery will begin a staged ramp-up to 650,000 barrels of gasoline per day by November 30.

He said: "We are just waiting for the first vessel. And so as soon as it comes in, we can start." However, as of today, October 31, the refinery has yet to commence refining activities. Sources familiar with the matter told Nairametrics that a shortage of available crude oil was the reason for this delay.

One of the sources said: “It is not true that Mr. Edwin Devakumar lied about the dates provided in September. However, there are some delays when it comes to crude deliveries. But the company is working to resolve these challenges and soon the refinery will begin refining activities.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Regulatory Company (NNPC) Limited has not yet complied with the agreement with Dangote Refinery for the delivery of 300,000 barrels of crude oil per day to the facility.

Furthermore, the refinery's scheduled imports of crude oil for this month have not arrived for unclear reasons, adding to the delays past the estimated time of delivery.

The Dangote refinery is theoretically ready for refining, which is a key point to remember.
