14,000 Nigerians could be deported from Germany due to a lack of identity cards

According to Olaf Scholz, the chancellor of Germany, at least 14,000 Nigerians who are seeking asylum in Germany face deportation due to a lack of identity documents.

Scholz claims that because of Nigeria's government's unwillingness to accept individuals without the required identity documents, over 12,500 Nigerians are living in Germany under a status of tolerance.

During a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, the German Chancellor gave this reason, "the current spike in Nigerians filing initial asylum claims in 2023 has sparked worries."

He noted that "Nearly 14,000 Nigerians might be deported, and the great majority of them do not have the necessary identification cards.

"We are prepared to collaborate in order to enhance migration," adding that Germany would be happy to send back any Nigerian national who had behaved well.

President Tinubu hinted at the possibility of working together to find a solution to the issue of the upcoming deportation in his response.

According to Tinubu, his administration was prepared to let people go, particularly those who had behaved well and were acknowledged as fellow citizens.

He said "Nigeria is prepared to welcome them back as long as they have behaved well, but only if they stand to gain something from it. Rather, we ought to cease providing the 640 million euros in development funding.

"If someone is a compatriot and has 'behaved well," we are willing to accept them back. We're prepared to collaborate in order to enhance migration."
