Atiku urges electorate to vote for PDP's Melaye
His Excellency Atiku Abubakar (GCON), who served as the nation's vice president from 1999 to 2007 and is the National Leader of the Opposition PDP, led the party team into Kogi State ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election. The party was showing support for Senator Dino Melaye, who is running for the state's governorship.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Senator Aminu Tambuwal, the former governor of Sokoto State, Senator Abdul Ningi, Boni Haruna, Capt. Idris Wada, the former governor of Kogi State, Senator Umar Bature, the PDP national organizing secretary, and Amb. Umar Iliya Damagun, the party's acting national chairman.
Atiku, who also goes by the traditional title of Waziri Adamawa, spoke at the event and asked the Kogi people to vote for the PDP and then stand by their ballots.
Dino Melaye possesses the qualities that make someone a good leader, he said. "He is committed, courageous, dedicated, and patriotic," Atiku said. Despite the unconventional measures taken by the APC government in the state to thwart the opposition, such as reserving all of the hotels in the state capital and preventing the opposition from using the state stadium that the PDP administration built, he remained confident that the PDP would win the election.
Atiku reminded everyone that the PDP had won the previous Osun State governorship election despite using similar unhealthy strategies.
Speaking after accepting the party's flag from the acting chairman, Dino Melaye pledged, should he be elected, to rule the state with fear of God. In addition, he pledged to give local governments more power and to reinstate those public employees who had been fired. In addition, he pledged to fulfill his campaign promises and to reform the state to maximize its tourism potential.
