About 160,000 Boko Haram Terrorists Have Repented — Governor Zulum
Governor Zulum said though there were still Boko Haram insurgents around, “they are not strong”
Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno, reports that 160.000 Boko Haram militants have turned around in the state.
When Zulum met Muhammadu Abubakar, the Minister of Defense, and his entourage in Maiduguri on Tuesday, he made this revelation.
Although there are still some Boko Haram insurgents in the area, according to Governor Zulum, their numbers have decreased.
“Generally, the security situation in Borno State has tremendously improved,” he announced.
“About 160,000 Boko Haram (insurgents) have so far repented. This could not have been possible without the continuous onslaught of the military on them.”
However, Zulum demanded that the proliferation of light weapons in the Lake Chad basin be controlled because he believed it could undo the progress gained in the fight against terrorism.
“The influx of ISWAP and proliferation of light arms from the Sahelian region through the porous borders of the Chad Basin countries, especially Borno State, is worrisome.
“The Sahel is now our major problem. We have to make sure that there is no safe haven in Borno State to succeed in the terror war.
“The only way we can degrade the insurgents and clear the Chad Basin of insurgency is by upscaling and continuous military operations.
“We have to be very careful about the way we disseminate the terror war information.”
The Minister of Defense had earlier indicated that he was in Borno State to evaluate the status of the fight on terror, along with Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defense, Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff, and all of the service chiefs.
