The late human rights activist Gani Fawehinmi gave Atiku Abubakar the idea to research President Bola Tinubu's academic background. Atiku Abubakar is the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) nominee for president in the general election of 2023.

Regarding Tinubu's academic standing at Chicago State University (CSU), Atiku had sued him.

On Thursday, he declared at a worldwide press conference: "I must thank our lawyers, both here and abroad, for helping us bring clarity to this issue that has dragged on for about half of a century.

"The late Human right Gani Fawehinmi, has vindicated us. Now he can truly rest in peace knowing that the journey he started 23 years ago is on course."

Fawehinmi filed an injunction at the Federal High Court in Lagos on October 7, 1999, requesting that security personnel look into criminal claims he had made against Tinubu, the then-governor of Lagos State.

In his 1999 filings with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tinubu had raised the issue of lost certificates.

He did, however, claim to have attended St. Paul Children's Home School in Ibadan from 1958 to 1964 as well as Government College in Ibadan (GCI) from 1965 to 1968 before moving on to Richard Daley College in Chicago from 1969 to 1971 and then the University of Chicago.
