UCL: Arsene Wenger Comments On Man City's Goal Against Real Madrid

Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger, the former manager of Arsenal, has attributed Manchester City's equalizer against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday to the video assistant officials.

Wenger said that the on-field officials lacked the equipment necessary to determine whether the ball went out or not.

While Real Madrid players were demonstrating, VAR had a responsibility to thoroughly examine the matter.

At the Santiago Bernabeu, Kevin de Bruyne tied the score after Vinicius Junior had given the Spanish powerhouses the lead earlier in the first half.

However, it appeared like the ball was out for a throw-in prior to the English champions' goal.

Wenger said that the on-field officials lacked the equipment necessary to determine whether the ball went out or not.

While Real Madrid players were demonstrating, VAR had a responsibility to thoroughly examine the matter.

"The VAR normally should check if the goal is regular or not. In a situation like that they have to intervene," Wenger said on beIN Sport.

"They did not go far enough back to check if the ball was out or not, or they did not have the potential to
check if the ball was out or not.

"I think I would go for the second [option] because normally the VAR cannot check on the side-line, only on the goal-line."
