Nigerians Can Now Obtain Debit Cards From Their Banks That Double As National IDs - FG
Nigerians can now request, at no additional cost, that their commercial banks issue them with a debit card that also serves as their National Identity Card.
On May 24, 2023, in Abuja, the Minister of Communications and the Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, made this announcement. The Card will take the shape of a multipurpose card, acting as both your bank card and your national identity card simultaneously.
A smart ID card that you can download through the NIMC app was introduced last year. Just a smart card, really. It is not physically necessary, but it is getting harder for our people who live in remote areas.
Pantami claims that banks are allowed to print any type of card in addition to a Mastercard, Visa, or other card.
On May 24, 2023, in Abuja, the Minister of Communications and the Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, made this announcement. The Card will take the shape of a multipurpose card, acting as both your bank card and your national identity card simultaneously.
Your privacy and confidentiality must be preserved during the provision of the card for you, according to a nondisclosure agreement that was signed by NIMC and the central bank. When you request a card, the bank will submit an online application to NIMC using their database. The card will be issued for you right away once they have verified and confirmed that your record in the database is consistent with your record in the NIMC database, the minister said.
"So when you apply for a card at your bank, you can indicate that 'I want this card to be for multiple purposes where it will serve as my bank card and also my national identity card. Both of them are going to be printed on the same card and it is going to serve the same purposes without any additional costs."
